The Honest Woodcutter
Once upon a time, in a small village nestled near a forest, there lived a poor woodcutter named Aslam. He was known throughout the village for his hard work and honesty. Every day, Aslam would go into the forest to chop wood, which he sold in the market to earn a living.
One day, as Aslam was chopping wood near a riverbank, his axe slipped from his hand and fell into the deep river. Aslam sat down on the ground, devastated. The axe was his only tool to earn a livelihood, and without it, he wouldn’t be able to support his family.
As he sat there, a shimmering figure emerged from the river—it was the river fairy! She asked Aslam, “Why do you look so sad?”
Aslam explained his problem. The fairy smiled kindly and said, “Don’t worry. I will help you.”
The fairy dived into the river and soon emerged with a golden axe. She asked, “Is this your axe?”
Aslam shook his head. “No, that is not mine. My axe was made of iron, not gold.”
The fairy disappeared into the river again and came back with a silver axe. “Is this your axe?” she asked.
Again, Aslam replied, “No, my axe is simple and made of iron, not silver.”
Finally, the fairy went into the water one last time and returned with Aslam’s old iron axe. “Is this your axe?” she asked.
Aslam’s face lit up. “Yes! That’s my axe! Thank you so much!”
The fairy was impressed with Aslam’s honesty. “You could have easily taken the golden or silver axe, but you chose to be truthful. For your honesty, I will give you all three axes—gold, silver, and iron.”
Aslam was overjoyed and thanked the fairy. He returned to his village with all three axes and shared his story with everyone. From that day forward, Aslam became even more respected in his village, not just for his hard work, but also for his honesty.

جب اسلم بیٹھا روتا تھا، اچانک دریا سے ایک چمکدار پری نمودار ہوئی۔ اس نے پوچھا، “تم کیوں اداس ہو؟”
اسلم نے اپنی مشکل پری کو بتائی۔ پری نے مسکرا کر کہا، “فکر نہ کرو، میں تمہاری مدد کروں گی۔”
پری دریا میں گئی اور ایک سنہری کلہاڑا لے کر واپس آئی۔ اس نے پوچھا، “کیا یہ تمہارا کلہاڑا ہے؟”
اسلم نے سر ہلا کر کہا، “نہیں، میرا کلہاڑا لوہے کا تھا، سونے کا نہیں۔”
پری دوبارہ پانی میں گئی اور چاندی کا کلہاڑا نکال کر لائی۔ “کیا یہ تمہارا کلہاڑا ہے؟” اس نے پوچھا۔
اسلم نے پھر انکار کیا۔ “نہیں، میرا کلہاڑا سادہ لوہے کا تھا، چاندی کا نہیں۔”
آخر کار، پری لوہے کا کلہاڑا لے کر نکلی اور پوچھا، “کیا یہ تمہارا کلہاڑا ہے؟”
اسلم خوش ہو کر بولا، “ہاں! یہ میرا کلہاڑا ہے! بہت شکریہ!”
پری اسلم کی ایمانداری سے بہت متاثر ہوئی اور بولی، “تم سچ بول سکتے تھے اور سونے یا چاندی کا کلہاڑا لے سکتے تھے، لیکن تم نے ایمانداری کا مظاہرہ کیا۔ اس لیے میں تمہیں تینوں کلہاڑے—سونے، چاندی، اور لوہے کے—دیتی ہوں۔”
اسلم خوشی سے گاؤں واپس آیا اور سب کو اپنی کہانی سنائی۔ اس دن کے بعد، اسلم کو گاؤں میں اور بھی عزت ملی، نہ صرف اس کی محنت کے لیے بلکہ اس کی ایمانداری کے لیے بھی۔
